Why do I need to have a filling?
You might need a filling because you have decay in a tooth, where the filling is required to fill in the space created by the removal of decay. You might also need a filling if one of your current fillings needs to be replaced, or if a tooth has cracked or has been damaged.
What will happen during my appointment?
If you need a filling, we will begin by applying a local anesthetic to the area around the tooth. Next, we will meticulously remove all decay from the tooth, using very precise instruments.
When all decay has been removed from the tooth, we will prepare the tooth for filling by etching the surface of the tooth. Etching allows the filling to bond completely to the surface of the tooth.
Once the filling has completely bonded to the tooth, the surface of the tooth will be polished to ensure that the texture of the completed filling is consistent with the surface of your tooth.
Benefits of Bonded Fillings
A bonded filling is a dental filling that is made of a composite resin. Although it is often referred to as a ‘white filling’, bonded fillings are actually not quite white, but are similar in colour to your teeth. This type of filling blends in more naturally with your teeth in contrast to traditional silver amalgam fillings.
Is a bonded filling a good choice?
A bonded filling is appropriate when the cavity to be filled is small and the area is not exposed to a lot of force in the mouth. If the cavity to be filled is large or if it is on a molar and you grind your teeth, a bonded filling may not be your best option. Our knowledgeable team will be pleased to explain your options and help you to decide if a bonded filling is right for you.
What can I expect after my bonded filling appointment?
Most patients will not notice anything different after the bonded filling is placed. You will be able to eat and drink normally once the local anesthetic has worn off. If you do notice any discomfort, please contact our office.
